Martina Basson Illustration is a fine line hand drawn illustration company owned by Tina Basson. Tina does the most gorgeous, delicate, illustrations and loves to work in black and white.
How long have you been in business and how did you get started?
The business has been going for five months. I started to draw illustrations for friends to give as gifts to test the water and found the reactions to be very positive. In November 2017 I had the opportunity to take part in the 'Roots & Wings' exhibition at The Project Room and from there the ball started rolling.
What inspired you to start your business?
In a nutshell: I got real about what I really felt in my heart to do and ultimately, God guided me and gave me the go-ahead... so I went for it!
What would you say was your biggest challenge to overcome?
There are so many talented creatives nowadays that it is a constant challenge not to compare myself to them. It is especially challenging knowing that I did not study the field. Another challenge is to fight that daunting feeling of being exposed to opinions and criticism.
What is your favourite part of your business?
To get going with ink and see how the illustrations come alive! Also, peoples' reactions when they see the final product.
What change are you looking forward to most this year?
I look forward to explore, learn, see my style develop and my skills improve.
Where do you go to find inspiration for your business?
I find inspiration in the things that I appreciate, things that intrigue me and things that make me happy (plants make me happy for example). Most of these 'things' come from my immediate surroundings. If I had to go somewhere to find inspiration it would be the outdoors or a bookstore.
Do you have a hidden talent?
I make very good ice cream!
How do you create a connection between you and your clients?
I try to convey an honest and personal representation of myself through my work and social media.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I don't know really... with three or four kids! Who knows what will happen within the next ten years, but I would like to one day have a collection of my illustrations compiled in a book for people to smile at as they page through.
What other profession would you love to try?
Botanist. Textile designer. Food scientist.
