What is documentary photography?
The aim of documentary photography is to tell a story through a series of images. Storytelling photography captures your everyday moments, relationships, connections and emotions. You will never have this moment in your life again and the goal is to preserve these moments and memories for you and your children. You will treasure these pictures for years to come!
How does documentary photography differ from lifestyle photography?
Lifestyle photography and documentary photography are often confused, but they are very different. Lifestyle photography are orchestrated moments created by the photographer through posing or directing. Documentary photography is focussed on showing the real, honest, genuine moments, unposed and unscripted.
What kind of sessions can be photographed documentary style?
A lot of moments in your life lend themselves to be photographed documentary style. Bringing a newborn home from hospital (yes I will get in the car with you and document everything!), visiting grandma, baking with mom (any activity you regularly enjoy together), playing with dad. Family sessions with young children is usually full of stress and anxiety, small children don’t like to sit still and smile at strangers. What should be a wonderful, fun family experience just isn’t that fun anymore. The kids are much happier and comfortable in their own homes or somewhere your family frequents. This is also where they are at their best and the most natural family interactions and moments take place.
What is the ideal time to book a documentary family session?
What are you waiting for? The best time to do it is NOW. Because you will never have this moment back. I encourage clients to document their lives once a year to show how you grow. Order an album for each year to look back on and show your grandchildren one day.
What will happen during the session?
Basically, I’m just hanging out in your home or on location with you camera in hand. I interact with everyone naturally during the shoot, because getting to know you will help me make more meaningful pictures for you.
What if my family is too boring?
There is no such thing as a family that is too boring. There is no need to fill a session with endless fun activities. It's the everyday moments that you will cherish and appreciate.
What if my children isn’t “good” while we’re shooting?
I am there to document your life, at that moment in time. Everything that happens is part of the moment, all kids act crazy sometimes, my youngest loves a good tantrum and when she grows up I will remember it with a smile on my face and a happy heart. These are the moments you will tell them about one day, the stories you will tell their spouses and their children.
Does my home need to be perfect for a documentary family session?
My goal is to preserve your memories, as is. You and your children will remember things as they were, their room, their toys, the aim is to preserve these memories. My dad used to dance with me standing on his feet, I would love to have a picture of that. Or one of my mom teaching me to bake. I can’t even remember what my room looked like as a young child. You do not have to do anything to prepare for this session, no need to buy or wear matching outfits and no need to clean your house (I have three young kids believe me our home is rarely *uhm never* spotless.)
How many images do I receive?
Documentary Family sessions include about 50 images. These images are put into a gorgeous viewing galley that you can share with family and friends. You will receive a download link to your high resolution digital files. You will also receive a bonus slideshow with your session.
